TANGO LYRICS

= REPORT CARD =
Fall 2007

In almost two years of weekly (mostly) readings at Divino Lounge, we went through 81 different song lyrics, along with a handful of revisions. The original lyrics and my translations are all posted here—the majority of them with streaming mp3 files so you can hear the tune as you read.

Before I describe what lies ahead, let me express my thanks to everyone who encouraged me in the first phase of this ongoing project—especially Murat Erdemsel for giving me the chance to do this during his milonga, and DJ Yulia Kriskovets for happily working the songs into her playlist every week.

As for what's next—many of you have asked, and I intend to continue presenting these translations on a regular basis in DC. If you have a venue in mind, tell the host you want it.

Also, since no one else in North America seems to be doing this, and since knowing what the songs are about is rather important to meaningful dancing, I will be making a more concerted effort to publish some translations in book form. The market for poetry (let alone poetry in translation) is quite dire, however; so if you have any suggestions, please put them in an email. Any advice would be much appreciated.

I'm also hoping to complete a few more essays about tango songs as literature, since the first two (posted on the Essays page) were warmly received. As always, write to me with any questions or special requests, and I'll do all I can do feed your curiosity and mine.
